- How to get a Capitec credit card without the credit; Capitec Global One Card
- How to Activate the Capitec MasterCard SecureCode
- How to link your Capitec Global One Card to your PayPal Account and Why
- How to link PayPal to FNB (to withdraw money)
Ever wanted to buy something online, but they only accepted a credit card or worse... it was an international site and they only accepted PayPal?
Innovative offering
The Global One Card is an innovative offering from Capitec that allows you to purchase from these sites and do a whole lot more! It is in fact, a credit card without the credit! You will be able to make purchases online instantly and connecting your card to PayPal will literally open a world of possibilities.
It is true that you can connect your PayPal account to your FNB cheque account, but this comes with a steep monthly price of R85 per month and the risk of damaging your credit rating if you abuse the account.
The only drawback to the Global One Card is that you cannot withdraw funds from your PayPal account as if you had a FNB cheque account, but there are other options for withdrawing funds that will be discussed in another blog post.
This card gives you the power of a credit card and PayPal and you save a whole lot in bank fees at R4.50 a month! What's not to like?
The info-graphic below explains how important online shopping is in South Africa and the benefits of the Global One Capitec Credit Card compared to a normal credit card.
Update: Sorry about the image below. I have been trying to get Capitec Bank to update the image since November 2013, but they have not paid attention.
All you need is:
- Identification document
- Original proof of residential address (any of the approved documents in your name with your street address)
- Visit your nearest Capitec branch with the documents above and you'll have your account before you can say Global One Card. ๐
Activating your Capitec credit card ability is simple and painless.
You will need to activate the credit card facility of your card by asking for this service. Upon doing so, you will receive a print out of instructions on how you can activate your card. You will need to wait for 24 hours before attempting the procedure.
After you have followed through with the instructions and entered your pin you will be able to purchase anything your heart desires! The potential is huge!

Lin says
The payment fail everytime you make a purchase online because its looking for funds from your savings account, so than I dont think its nessecary to activate mastercard securecode
Lin says
If it a savings account with an ability to make online purchases than I think Capitec is misleading people thinking that when you activate the “credit card ability” of the card you would be able to shop online cashless or rather on credit, than why activate mastercard securecode “credit card ability” if you can do it with a normal debit card?

Did you read the freaking heading never mind the whole article? No you did not because you’re stupid!
Thilesh Rambalee says
Hey Kurt
Sorry mate, I forgot informing you about the outcome of my issue with Capitec Bank – Global One Card: The Online Shopping Tool.
With work and study, it slipped my mind.
This is the info I received on the matter via email:
Wed 2016-03-23 03:33 PM
Good day Mr Rambalee
Thank you for your email.
As far as we know Unisa only accepts Credit Cards and not Debit Cards that is the reason your Debit Master card is not accepted for payment.
Should you have any further queries please feel free to contact us on 0860 10 20 43 or +27 21 941 13 77.
Kind regards
I have a slight conflict with this assessment of the credit card payment option with UNISA. My sister has a Gold Cheque Account with FNB. This is a debit card which acts like a credit card. It has a Visa ability. She uses it to pay UNISA study fees and it works fine. Through using the credit card payment option.
Anyway if you have received any more info on this matter I would gladly appreciate the information.
Kind Regards
Thilesh Rambalee

Hi Thilesh,
No problem and thanks for updating me. ๐
I hope your studies are going well.
I highly doubt that the information the individual who replied on Capitec’s behalf has given you is correct.
The Global One Card should work everywhere where MasterCard is accepted even if it only accepts credit cards.
And as you see for yourself, it even accepts a Cheque account.
I haven’t received any response from Capitec on Twitter so I will ask them to help us with this on Facebook.
Hopefully we can get some insight!
Here is my post on Capitec’s timeline.
Capitec has responded and said you should contact the Client Care Centre at 0860 10 20 43.
Thilesh Rambalee says
Hey Kurt
Unfortunately I do not have a twitter account.
I will in the meantime first,
Email the bank through the client care address
Hopefully they will help try to solve the issue.
If not then I will call the customer care line for more info on a solution
Finally if that does not work then I will have to pay via EFT which takes a few days to reflect on my student account at UNISA. It is a little frustrating with regards to this issue as I was hoping to find a quicker method to paying my UNISA study fees.
Anyway I still can enjoy the other benefits of this service in buying goods online. Which is awesome.
Thanks for the quick feedbacks on my issue.
Your tutorial is great so thanks for making the process of connecting to this service with Capitec easier.
Kind Regards
Thilesh Rambalee
Kurt Wyngaard says
Alright, no problem. I have tweeted them and will let you know what they say.
Please keep me informed of the outcome as I would like to know what they say as well.
You’re welcome.
I hope they can help you with your issue.
Thilesh Rambalee says
Hey Mate
I have followed your tutorial in detail. Now when I go to the MasterCard SecureCode website. It only asks if I want to reactivate to change my securecode. This service is activated on my global one card.
Also I have the money to pay for my study fees in the account so I am sure this is not a problem.
Maybe Capitec bank has not changed my savings account to be both a debit and a credit card. Is there a way to change this status online or do I have to go to the nearest branch.
I am appreciating your responses and helpful advice to try and solve this issue.
Kind Regards
Thilesh Rambalee
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Thilesh,
Hmmm… that is strange. It should be working.
Maybe you should visit a Capitec bank near you and explain to them what is happening.
Do you have Twitter? Let me know what your Twitter handle is and I’ll ask them on Twitter in the mean time.
Thilesh Rambalee says
Hey Mate
Thanks for your quick feedback.
I tried to pay UNISA online through the credit card option. This is what happened.
Credit card transaction was not successfull โ see email sent. Authorization declined โ Email sent to address displayed. Response code: 39
This was in the email they sent me.
We regret to inform you that your bank has rejected your payment with the error code 39
Please contact your bank or find an alternative method of payment.
This is the credit card policy on the UNISA website payment method. This credit card option is a real time transaction.
Credit cards
Credit cards are restricted to Visa and Mastercard. Credit card payments are accepted if you pay or register in person at Unisa in Sunnyside/Florida or at one of the regional offices. Web link is on the website
Do I need to first pay at a regional office so my card info is on their system only problem is it says the bank has rejected my payment.
So any advice on this matter will be appreciated. As I am not sure what to do now.
Kind regards
Thilesh Rambalee
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Thilesh,
Response code: 39 means either there is No Money in your account or your card is a Debit Card.
Perhaps activating the Mastercard Securecode didn’t work? Did you follow this tutorial?
You should be able to pay with your credit card without paying in person.
Thilesh Rambalee says
Good Day Man
I just followed your simple and easy to follow instructions to activate my Capitec MasterCard SecureCode. I must thank you as your detailed instructions improved my understanding of the process.
My question to you is, “Do I need to link my card to PayPal?”. I understand it makes the process of buying international goods easier and simpler but my main reason to get the online shopping tool with Capitec is so I can pay my UNISA study fees online.
On the token of my main reason to get this service, now that I have activated the service can I use my Global One Card to pay UNISA as the quickest method of payment is through credit card.
Again I appreciated your site and very helpful guide in this process
Kind Regards
Thilesh Rambalee
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Thilesh,
Thank you for your kind words. ๐
I’m glad this tutorial could help you gain some insight.
Linking your card to PayPal is entirely optional and the choice remains with you.
Definitely use it to pay UNISA by using the credit card option!
All the best with your studies!

Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Ken,
It is not a different account and you don’t receive another account number.
It is the same account.

Rhandzu says
My mastercard securecode is now activated, but I cant link the card to my paypal account, everytime I try, I receive an on screen message saying that “the bank that issued my card did not approve of the transaction, I should call customer service. I did call the client centre but they couldnt help either. I seriously need to use paypal I have suppliers in china waiting for payments. Im so devastated right now
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Rhandzu,
I found a comment from Cris Marks that might help:
“Check with Capitec that you have ONLINE SHOPPING enabled on your card as PayPal falls under that. Then check what your daily AND online shopping limits are to see that you are not exceeding them when you use PayPal. Hope this helps.”
and
“when I get that message with PayPal it’s because I’m exceeding my daily Internet shopping limit with Capitec. I suggest you visit your Capitec branch and ask them what your daily Mail/Telephone Orders/Internet Shopping daily limit is set at. You can then change it at the branch. You can’t do it over the phone. This solved my problem with PayPal – keep the exchange rate plus the PayPal fees in mind when deciding on your daily limit. You can always lower it or increase it again but you’ll have to go back to the branch. Hope this helps”
Rhandzu says
Rhandzu
Hi I just activated my secure code yesterday and I tried linking my global one card to my paypal account and it declined, saying the bank did not approve.
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Rhandzu,
Did you wait the full 24 hours before activating?
Please have a look at the tutorial on how to activate your Capitec Global One Card Mastercode securecode for more info.

Beyonce says
is the any charges for the credit card?
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Beyonce,
It is a flat R4.50 per month, because you don’t get any credit like a normal credit card.
You can buy stuff with it online exactly the way you do with a normal credit card though.
Marion says
Good day
This Global One Card sound great. I would just like to find out is there a link to the follow up blog of how to withdraw from your PayPal account. You mentioned there is other ways of getting around it. I would like to know how before I dive into getting this account. Would really like to avoid FNB too.
Your help has been and will be much appreciated ๐
Kind regards
Marion Richards
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Marion, I haven’t posted about withdrawing money from PayPal as there are many things that hinder withdrawal. I know of payoneer, but I haven’t tested it and I’m not sure if it’s for South Africans. You can read this post about how to connect your Global One Card to PayPal for shopping if you’re interested.

Thanks very much that helps

If you are already a capitec customer do you still need to bring the proof of residence?
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Charles, This is directly from the Capitec Facebook page ” If you still have the Maestro card, just pop in at your nearest Capitec Bank branch and do a card replacement at R35.” So you only need to bring proof of residence when updating your account or you’re a new Capitec customer.

This is awesome!!!!
Kurt Wyngaard says
Thanks Lincoln, Are you planning on getting one?
SELLO says
Is this credit card has amount in it?if NO we ask you Capitec to give us credit card that has amount on it
Kurt Wyngaard says
Hi Sello, You could get that kind of credit card by any of the other banks. If you can’t see the potential of this then you should probably go to another bank for your credit card.
